Scattering Ashes At Sea

Saying the final goodbye can be one of the hardest moments in the process of grieving and letting go. Somehow you want to be sure the mood is right, and that the setting is special. You may want time to say important things, perhaps some special music that has particular meaning, and maybe some poetry or prayers. As family and friends you may want time alone to grieve.

Scattering the ashes of your loved one at sea can help you do just that. And you can do that all year round. The all inclusive cost is just £399 for you and up to 6 guests.

What Does The Time Include?

You get a fabulous 36ft yacht and skipper all to yourselves. Before the day you will be asked what your preferences are, and we will build the day around those choices, your choices. Your experienced skipper will welcome you and your invited family or guests on board, and then sail to your selected destination usually in the Solent.

At the appropriate time you will be left on your own to scatter the ashes in whatever way you have chosen. Many people have their loved ones’ music playing. Sometimes family members want to say a few words, or read some selected poetry. If you want prayers said, that can be arranged.

You may wish to toast your loved one in some way.

"When we scattered the ashes at sea we simply said ‘Goodbye Paul’. It was so utterly appropriate, and somehow it brought the closure I had been looking for"
H.Gooden Portsmouth

What Happens After We Scatter The Ashes?

For many this is a very important time too. Some call it ‘moving on’ others call it, ‘Breaking the mood’. For others, it is simply time to experience something good, wholesome and natural. We encourage all our guests to have the remainder of the day sailing. As one writer put it, ‘There is something that touches the eternal in the sea’. The wind in your hair, the open space, the sound of water on the hull, all does its bit to bring something lovely, something healing into your day.

You can relax totally, chill out, and let the skipper literally do it all for you – even serve your drinks. Or you and your group can be fully involved – helming and trimming the sails. Whatever works for you on the day.

Funeral Funeral

Will We Be Handled Appropriately & Sensitively?

Yes. We are a family business and the owner has been a pastor who has conducted many funeral services. We understand the need for appropriate tenderness and the need for different expressions of grief. Our skippers are mature and chosen for their ability to be sensitive and safety conscious

"Just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you so much for a fantastic day on Wednesday. We had a wonderful time and Trog was the perfect skipper. Please thank him from us!"
Catherine Trimby

What About Food & Drink?

Lunch is an important part of your day. The yacht has an immaculately clean en-suite loo, and an oven, a cooker, and a fridge. So if you want, so you are welcome to bring your own lunch and drinks and eat onboard. Many of our guests love to eat at anchor, opposite Queen Victoria’s Osborne House on the Isle Of Wight or in the natural sanctuary of the Beaulieu river. No corkage is charged. If you prefer, we can arrange all your food and drink or you can do what many other guests do, have a wonderful lunch at the renowned Folly’s Inn on the river Medina.

Where Can We Go?

On the day, or when discussing your preferences, your skipper will give you some great ideas. Together you will choose where you sail, maybe it’s Chichester’s natural harbour. You might choose Beaulieu River, or sail around the historic warships Victory and Warrior. Alternatively you can sail to Cowes and lunch at the world famous Folly’s Inn.

"This has been the best day I could have had. Having my friends and family share the day – writing comments for me in the ships log. Taking the dinghy from the boat and watching the seal at close quarters in Newtown Creek. Nothing could have topped this"
Josh Great Ormond Street

" A evening to remember!
What an incredible evening sailing with David Oliver to celebrate. After five years at sea on the Warspite in the Second World War, I had never had a Commander who served me champagne on the boat before! It was great to have my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter along . A ‘celebration’ we will always remember on a beautiful boat"Bud and Irene Richards - Manchester

The family charter

A Parable of Immortality

I am standing upon the seashore.

A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.

She is an object of beauty and strength.

I stand and watch until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud

Just where the sea and the sky come to mingle with each other.

Then someone

says, “There she goes!”

Gone where?

Gone from my sight, that is all.

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when she left my side

And just as able to bear her load of living freight to the place of destination.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone at my side says, "There she goes"

There are other eyes watching her coming

And their voices ready to take up the glad shouts,

"Here she comes!"
